THE BEGINNING
MORNING
The alarm goes off at 5:45 AM. My husband gets up and starts his day. I go back to sleep, proud of him for working such long days. At 6:45 AM I am awoken by his kiss goodbye.
My alarm goes off at 8 AM. As usual, I don't really get up then. I think about it, but there's nothing urgent due this morning. I finally roll out of bed around 9 AM, and spend some time downloading our bank and credit card transactions. I schedule a payment for one of the cards then waste another 20 minutes checking my RSS feeds. An alarm on my computer reminds me to go eat breakfast at 9:30 AM.
I straighten up the room, change into some presentable clothes, grab my purse, sunglasses, room key, my book, and head to the dining room. I've lived in this hotel for months now, so all the waiters and waitresses smile as I head to the buffet. I'm not very hungry this morning, so I'm glad I don't have to pay for breakfast. I enjoy watching Loony Tunes as I finish my hot cocoa - even if the dialog is in Portuguese.
AFTERNOON
I haven't been gone long, so I figure the maid hasn't had a chance to clean the room yet. It's a nuisance if I don't get it done in the morning, so I take my book and curl up on a hammock in the garden. I read one short story and head back to my room to get to work.
I log into oDesk.com to start my work day. First up, I check the forums and respond to anything important that came in the night before. My task for the rest of today is updating the rules and policies in the help center. I take care of that, plus a few emails and other articles. For lunch I walked to the gas station up the street for a quick bite at their luncheonette. We just got cash at the ATM, so I buy a couple bars of chocolate too. Then I don't feel so guilty making them brake my 50.
I end up logging almost 7 hours. It's Memorial Day in the US, so none of my bosses are around to chat with. Normally we talk frequently throughout the day, so today felt oddly quiet.
EVENING
I finish what I planned to accomplish for the day more than an hour before my husband came home. So I curled up in bed with the laptop to watch an episode of Torchwood that I'd downloaded from iTunes. We only get 1 channel in English here in Porto Seguro. I miss my DVR terribly.
Several of my husbands colleagues are in town today, so we all head downtown for a nice meal and spend a few hours chatting at the restaurant. I am so grateful to have different people to talk to... and ones who speak English! I feel guilty for not learning to speak with the Brazilians, but I just don't get enough chance to practice actually talking to people for any of my lessons to really sink in. I can read menus very well though - now that I've had practice at! I love that my husband can go do field work and I can travel with, but I miss being able to cook! If only I had a kitchen! Being a location independent professional is fantastic, but sometimes living in a hotel just isn't all it's cracked up to be
