THE BEGINNING
MORNING

My alarm went off at 6:42 AM just it did every morning. But I stayed in bed until 7 AM. I'd been up late the night before writing my resignation letter. The butterflies started to gather in my stomach as I took the dog out. I showered quickly and dressed quickly and tried to make it to work on time. I triple checked that I had my flash drive with me before I left the garage.

The owner and two of the 'top dogs' were out of town on a short business trip. And most of the gals who worked in the back with me don't come in until after 9 AM. The less people I have to talk to today, the better.

I decide that with so few people around, I can chance printing out my letter. It took a couple minutes to warm up and spit out my page. More than enough time to run up front and grab it before anyone could see. I carried a stack of papers with me to hide it in.

I worked as usual the rest of the morning, anxious to break the news to the HR manager (and owner's wife) at lunch time.
AFTERNOON

The woman was pregnant and only coming in for about 2 hours each day around lunch time. I gathered my nerves and went to her office only to find she'd already left.

I was distraught. I had flights scheduled for 15 days from now. I had to put in my notice TODAY.

The knot in my stomach grew all afternoon. I was an admin asst to the operations manager. Thankfully, he hadn't gone on this particular business trip. If he had, there would have been NO ONE left above me on the food chain to resign to.

My heart was pounding by the time 4:55 PM rolled around. I finished up my work and dug the letter out of my drawer where I'd hidden it. This was it. He'd better be in his office when I get up there.

He was. I walked in and said 'I've got something important I need to talk to you about.' I shut the office door. Frankly, I had a pretty fantastic reason for leaving. My husband travelled extensively for work. I was tired of being left home alone. I was quitting to travel with him.
EVENING

I handed him my letter and said I would email it to the owner and his wife before I went home. I was relieved to see the receptionist had gone home by the time I had to walk back by her desk. I told the gals still around in the back office and drove home, still shaking from my nerves.

I called my mom on the way home. I HAD to talk to SOMEONE. My husband was away on business, of course, so I was going home to my puppy and an empty house. My nerves had calmed by the time I got home and a fantastic sense of relief had taken the place of my anxiety.

It was two days before any of the managers came and said anything to me. "So I hear you're leaving us..." By then I'd had enough time to figure out what I'd say when forced to address this uncomfortable issue. "Yup, I'm running away to Brazil." It was the truth, and there's absolutely nothing they could say to make me feel guilty in follow-up. I stuck to the same line whenever it came up in person or on the phone for the next two weeks.
