THE BEGINNING
MORNING

I used to work nights as a communication coach in the call center industry. My “day” started at nine o’clock in the evening and ended at eleven in the morning the next day. Anyway, this started out a typical day, except that I was really excited because I was going to be on leave the next evening, and it was going to be my birthday in a couple of days. That day was October 18th.

So, I cheerfully got to work early so I can work on a few things in advance. That way, I wouldn’t have any backlog when I get back the following week. I evaluated a couple of agent calls, muttered about the state of their communication skills and made perfunctory notes on a piece of paper. I also had a client meeting at midnight via conference call, so I put on my headset and dialed into the conference. I didn’t mind these meetings. I was there solely as an observer so it gave me enough time to rest from my “real” work.
AFTERNOON

It was in the middle of the meeting when someone peeked from behind the divider of my work station. It was Justin, one of my friends, wearing a funny party hat and grinning at me like an idiot. Before I could understand what he was up to, he started singing “Happy Birthday“ and the rest of my team strolled in, singing off-key, and one of my other friends, Benjamin was holding a cake. I think my mouth was open for a whole minute before I realized they were giving me a surprise party. My eyes misted up and I forgot about the meeting. I was so, well, surprised.

I blew the candle, sniffed a bit, and tried to make a speech while my phone was on mute and the conference call went on without me. Then I shooed them to the pantry where I promptly had pizza delivered. My boss was nice enough to let us extend our lunch break a bit, and we stuffed ourselves with pizza and cake, and laughed ourselves silly. We had to go back to work after a while.
EVENING

At the end of the day, still touched and light-hearted, I checked my email before leaving work. I had to meet my mom at the mall, and was running a bit late.

So I shut down my other programs and waited for my email to pop up, when I suddenly noticed a new email at the top of my inbox. The email was from the publisher I sent my book to a month before, thinking I had nothing to lose.

I started shaking. Was my happiness that day just a way to make up for the heartbreak of having my first attempt at getting published shut down?

I took a deep breath and clicked on the link to the email.

"Thank you for submitting your manuscript..... It... got... accepted..."

I stared at the screen with wide eyes, mouth open and heart palpitating. I...am finally going to be... a published author. I think I danced in the clouds for the rest of the day, having my dream finally come true.

That was my very, very best day ever, and I think any day thereafter would be hard-pressed to beat that
