Picking The Right College

THE BEGINNING
MORNING
Back when I was young, my toughest decision was picking which college to attend. It started at the beginning of my senior year at USD High School. I wasn't sure what I wanted to do with my life.
I figured I would send out applications to many of the schools in California just to be sure that I could have a choice later.
My parents asked me what I was going to do and where I was going to go. But I would not decide my major until after my first year of college.
So, when I started getting approval letters in the spring of 1991, I now needed to make a final choice.
AFTERNOON
I have to admit that I chose San Diego State because I wanted to be able to party a little. I didn't want to end up somewhere that was going to bore me to death. It seems like a bad reason to pick a school. But I have to plead ignorance due to youth.
I was to start school the next fall without declaring a major. When I made my decision, I wasn't sure if I was making the right or wrong one. I just told myself that if I made the wrong choice, I would transfer to another school.
But as it turns out, I started taking some business courses that seemed to suit me. It was where I learned how to make decisions and how to be responsible. I made friendships that are still lasting and rewarding.
EVENING
Would I have been able to do the same things at another school? I'm not sure. I definitely wouldn't have made the friends that I did. Without my friends, I wouldn't have started this website and I wouldn't be writing my life story right now.
So, I guess I did pick the right college. I don't doubt that at all. And the dividends are still paying off.
I guess my advice to all those who have to pick a school is: it's not as important where you go as long as you make the most of it while you're there. Don't take things like making friends lightly. That may be the most important thing you do there.
