THE BEGINNING
MORNING
I've had too many days at work to remember them all. But perhaps the most important one for me is my first day for my first full-time job.
My mind seemed to go blank when I got to work that Monday morning. I brought a couple of my technical books as well as a sack lunch. I had a cubicle close to the elevator. I was given another tour of the entire office and met with everyone I was going to work with.
The manager gave my some documentation I could review and well and a run-down of all the websites that they had. I would work with the developers to maintain and create new websites. The previous database administrator had left the company a month earlier.
I wrote down everything that I would probably need. I wanted to dig in and prove myself, but it would take a couple of weeks before I was comfortable with everything.
AFTERNOON
I brought a sack lunch since I didn't know where to go eat the day. I had never worked in downtown before. I didn't think I should take trying to find a good place to eat.
My manager said that he would show me some of the better places to eat the next day. I thanked him and had my lunch at my cubicle.
I spent the rest of the day configuring my computer to the way I like it. I printed out the documentation and clipped some of them on my cubicle walls.
I would spend a good 4 years there and my cubicle was home away from home. I met some good friends while I was working there too.
EVENING
That night I remember talking endlessly about how great the first day was. I knew I had picked the right place to work.
I learned many things and did many things that I'm proud of while I was working there. Some things weren't easy and I made a few mistakes. But, overall, it was one of the best places I've worked at.
I've been fortunate to have a good career doing something that I enjoy. It's easy to forget how everything started when you do it for a long time. But I just wanted to write this so that I can remember it when I'm all done.
