THE BEGINNING
MORNING
I'm not sure if this was one of my worst days. But it was definitely a bad day. I had just bought my condo months before and I now had a mortgage to worry about.
The company I worked for had just been purchased. They were bought by a company in Los Angeles. The news had come down that they were going to relocate our company to L.A.
I definitely didn't want to sell my condo. And I didn't want to work in L.A. I went up one day to see the new office. The traffic alone would be enough to discourage the move.
I've visited L.A. many times before but I couldn't see myself living there. So, now I knew I would be out of a job.
AFTERNOON
It was days before my last day and I had some time to look for a new job. I talked to some of my co-workers and some of them were excited about moving to L.A. Some were going to stay in San Diego and were looking for new jobs too.
I fixed up my resume and asked if they could be my references. I was in much more of a hurry than they were because I had just spent most of my savings on the 20 percent down payment a few months earlier.
It was strange telling my boss that I would not be moving up with them. I really enjoyed working there. They were one of the very first companies that enabled users to fax documents using a computer.
EVENING
I did find a job after a couple of weeks of looking. It turns out that I would get a job that helped me meet the people who came up with this website. I work on this website now in my spare time.
I laugh now when I think about how worried I was over nothing. But it was scary thinking about losing my home after purchasing it only months before.
Today, I still tell this story to my friends and co-workers. I tell them that I could be working on the 20th floor of a high-rise building on Hollywood Boulevard. I might have lunch around celebrities and party in Santa Monica.
But then again, if I did live there, I wouldn't have been able to bring this website to you.
