THE BEGINNING
MORNING
I remember getting the call for my first job after finishing school. It felt like I was walking on air that day. I got my degree at SDSU in business. I was looking for a job as an accountant. I got lucky and ended up accounting for a large company in downtown.
They were into doing government contracts that included high-tech software. I learned how to manage people and projects. That led me to where I am now, a manager and new business entrepreneur.
That morning, I had eaten breakfast and was looking over listings of job openings. I had done interviews for a couple of weeks and was still looking for the right job.
I still had money saved up. So, getting a job wasn't that urgent. But I felt a sort of need to prove myself that I could do something important.
AFTERNOON
I got the call shortly after lunch. I remember doing a little housework when the phone rang. It was the supervisor for the company that I had done an interview for just 3 days ago. They had offered me a position of junior accountant.
Once I finished my awkward thank-yous and good-byes. I spent the rest of the day celebrating. I had to call just about everyone I knew to let them know.
I went to the mall to buy some work clothes and shoes. I wasn't sure if I was going to need a briefcase so I decided to wait before buying one.
EVENING
That night, my friends took me out for dinner. Of course I couldn't stop smiling. What was my future going to be like? How was I going to do at my new job? Will I like working there?
I probed my friends a little about the first day at their new jobs. But they all told me different tales. So, I just had to wait and see.
It turns out that it wouldn't be my last job either. I would move into a new career path. But I could never forget the feeling of the fresh start on a long journey.
